Lucy (est’d date of birth 3/19/12) came to us on March 19, 2015. She’d shown up almost two weeks previously at someone’s house during an ice storm looking for shelter. When it became clear that she was planning to stick around AND that she was pregnant, they called Challenger’s House for help.
She was hugely pregnant when we got her, and we expected her to give birth at any moment. Almost two long weeks later, after being fussed over and pampered and with her belly growing bigger with every passing moment, she finally gave birth to SEVEN healthy kittens – on April Fools Day, of course. Lucy cared for those babies wonderfully, and they thrived under her care. She further proved herself to be an exceptional mother when a 5 week old orphan kitten (Carlin) was found by the side of the road and introduced to her. She cared for him as though he were her own, and he blossomed under her love.

Since her kittens opted to be silly and arrive on April Fools’ Day, Lucy’s official name is Lucille Ball, and her kittens are all named after comedians (Louis (“Lou-ie”), Rickles, Skelton, Shecky, Belushi, Roseanne and Gilda) and referred to collectively as The Fools.
Carlin. Estimated date of birth: 4/15/15
Carlin came to us on May 22nd at the age of approximately 5 weeks old. Someone found him in the road with a dead sibling laying nearby. We introduced him to the rest of the Fools and to Lucy. After some initial hissiness on Lucy’s part, she gave up, accepted him, and now treats him as one of her own. The rest of the Fools accepted him almost immediately, and treat him as a pesky younger brother.
You can read about Lucy beginning here and her kittens beginning here, and Carlin beginning here (there are links at the top and bottom of each entry; click on the one on the right to take you to the next one). You can see all the pictures taken of them during their stay with us here at Flickr.

Carlin and Skelton were adopted – together – on 7/9/15. Their big brother is Bill, from the True Blood 6! Carlin is now named George, and Skelton is Red. You can see them, Bill, and occasionally sister Izzy on Instagram!

It would be neat to calculate how many ounces the kittens have gained and compare to Lucy’s weight loss ( about 16 ounces). The difference must be made up by the number of ounces of cat food she had to scarf down to keep the milk bar flowing.
Hi there! Today was a VERY exciting day for us! Today we gave Shecky a forever home! We met Susan at PetSmart, in Madison, and fell in love with Shecky! He is quite the little adventure! We are so excited to have him home with us and thank you for taking such good care of him and his brothers and sisters! Shecky now lives in Madison and is already being spoiled rotten! I would love to keep in touch with you and give you updates! He is just too sweet and, like I said, VERY adventurous!
Love & Hisses readers LOVE updates!!! You are already adored by all!! Thank you for giving a sweet baby, a happy loving home!!!
Louis is doing wonderfully well. He’s settled in beautifully. The older cat doesn’t want to play with the rambunctious youngster, but that doesn’t stop the kitten at all. He is one of the sweetest and most cuddly kittens I’ve ever come across (he’s sitting in my lap purring his head off as I type this). He’s already learned his new name and he comes when called. He understands “no” even if he doesn’t always listen, and his favorite toy is the soft fuzzy ball that came in his toy bag. Louis (now Connor) is a happy little bundle of furry canned cat energy with no off button who can eat his weight in food. He is well loved and my thanks for raising such a well adjusted little guy. Let me know where to send them and I’ll send you a few pictures of the mischievous little mite. 🙂
I am so thrilled to hear that Connor is doing so well!
You can email pictures to mizrobyn (at) gmail.com – and thank you!!! 🙂
Gilda, now Trixie the Gypsy, traveled to Arizona over the summer! She enjoyed looking out at the countryside between naps on Jessica’s lap. At night, she had fun playing at pet friendly hotels. Gypsy is the best kitty. She lives to explore! Thank you.
