Sights from around Crooked Acres.
This rooster whipped his head around to look in my direction, and his wattle went left….
Then he stared off into space, doing his best supermodel pose.
When it’s cold outside, the chickens spend more time in the coop than outside. But when they see me coming, they know there’s probably going to be a tasty snack involved.
“I’m flying! I’M FLYINNNNNNNG!”
The girl ducks like to go hang out under the coop to have a little girl time, gossip, and mock the chickens. The boy ducks wait just outside the coop, impatiently, for their wimminfolk to come back out.
This rooster is huge (you can’t really tell from the picture, but trust me on this).
I guess girl time is over, and the boys are escorting the girls back to the pond. Where they BELONG.
Pretty little hen (I think), has a little of everything going on here. Some toasted-marshallow coloring, some green-black feathers, some pretty speckled feathers.
One of the Brahma hens, trying to decide whether it’s worth her while to leave the nice warm coop.
“You waaaaaant to giiiiiive me a treeeeeeeat….”
Assuming that the wet weather is going to start soon, Fred has let the water level in the pond drop. It better start raining soon or we’re going to have some unhappy catfish (or more likely, Fred will start the well water running into the pond again).
George and Gracie prefer the pond a bit lower, because they like to cavort in the mud around the edges.
Most of the rest of the hens are molting and look a mess, but Cruella has remained perfectly coiffed. I’m starting to think she’s going to skip molting this year.
The Angry Muppet is also looking un-molty. To be honest, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her molt. Maybe she does it while I’m not paying attention.
The Rock Star, on the other hand, is molting like crazy. That is one hot mess she’s got going on on her head.
Between the molting and the shorter days of Fall, we’re lucky to get 3 eggs a day lately. I’ll be glad when the days start getting longer and the hens get their act together. I need eggs!
Here are some pictures I got off the Game Cam (set up in the side yard) back in August.
Early in the morning, Stefan wanted out of the back yard (if you look at the gate, you’ll see Stefan climbing up the inside of the fence to get out of the back yard.)
And in the evening, he wanted IN the back yard. That Stefan certainly knows how to take matters into his own paws.
Fred put some left over popcorn out for the raccoons and possums one night.
The possums were fans of the popcorn, to say the least.
Another early morning trip into the back yard for Stefan.
If you look at the bottom of the gate, you’ll see Corbie sticking his paw through in an attempt to get himself some of that sweet, sweet popcorn.
Woodpecker approves of the cat food.

Paulie Walnuts thinks the ceiling fan is faaaaabulous.
Carmela and Tony, cheesin’ it up for the camera.
Meadow, contemplating the jump up onto the bed.
Five of the seven, checking out the ceiling fan. Left to right is Paulie Walnuts, Tony, Carmela, Meadow, and Silvio.
Six of the seven. On the left Melfi is getting grabby with Tony. “Bro! Don’t fall off the bed. It’s a long way down!”
All seven kittens! Would be nice if they’d all look at me, though…
Not looking at me, but you can see at least part of everyone’s face. That’s pretty good, right?
Silvio’s like “I’m outta here.”
So in the morning when I give Livia and the kittens their morning snack, I leave the door to the foster room open. Once they’re done eating, they have the run of the upstairs, and they spend a LOT of time curled up on Fred’s bed, snoozing. They get the run of the upstairs until bedtime, and then they go back into the foster room for the night.
Yesterday, they got to meet the vacuum cleaner. Most of them ran and hid, Tony sat up on the cat tree and meowed at me, and Melfi smacked the vacuum cleaner then ran and hid. Silly girl.

It is so nice to see pics of Crooked Acres again! Thank you!!!
Miss Melfi is such a brave little lady, smacking that mean, scary o’l vacuum cleaner to show it what for. I’ve told my cats that if our vacuum cleaner ever tries to attack them, I will fling myself upon the noisy monster and kill it dead. My calico Hawthorne was most unimpressed with my pledge, like “I could do that myself, but I can’t really be bothered to get up. Bring me treats, wench.”
You are very brave! You must love those kitties an awful lot to be willing to tangle with the vacuum! π
“Crooked Acres is the place to be, farm livin’ is the life for me…” If I promise to behave and help scoop kitty litter, can I come hang out with you guys? I will even sleep in one of the coops. Love the game cam pics!
Sure! (I bet it’s actually pretty restful in the coop at night, with the sleeping chickens occasionally cooing!)
The game cam could almost be renamed the “butt cam”! π
It certainly could! π
LOL at Melfi smacking the vacuum. I have one cat who went through a phase where she would come into the bathroom, sit on the back of the toilet, and watch the blowdryer intently for awhile as I was using it, then give it a really good smack and march off as if her work was done.
Carmela & Tony, that is a precious photo π
That Alice pic and the caption: genius!
I’m sorry but with that black and white get-up, that himbo of a rooster reminds me of you know who, Zoolander.

I almost said something about him doing the Blue Steel pose! π
Yay!!! Crooked Acres pictures!! Love seeing George and Gracie (though the thought of those two playing in the mud gives me the shivers….yikes!).
Yeah, better them than me! π
Alice. The clock. The song. Oh, you crack me up you witty gal!
I have to admit, I cracked myself up, too! π
I β₯β₯β₯ The Alice Mo Song
You need to get some of that special tape that Laurie uses over at IBKC
I think Laurie uses WITCHCRAFT. π
You know that iffy one is totally a rooster, right? Look at dem hackle feathers!
Yes, Fred informed me of that fact! π
Our Opposums up in Washington State are much fluffier.
Love the picture of Carmela and Tony! And I’m amazed that Tony and Melfi didn’t run from the vacuum. Harley’s the first cat I’ve had who doesn’t run, but watches from a distance – however, that’s new behavior in the last year, and she’s at least 12 years old!
That is one handsome set o’ wattles! Who is Top of the Flock with Toasty gone?
Love seeing the pics if your farm!! Please post more!!
