Arriving in our foster room yesterday morning: our new fosters! We have a naming theme, just need to pin down names and assign them to the right kittens (and also figure out how to tell them all apart.) I didn’t get pictures of each and every face – that’s my aim for today – but I think I got most of them in these pictures.
Mama’s name is Ryder. There are 9 – NINE – kittens, they’re all hers, and they’re in great shape.
The orange and white in the back right is a boy; the others are girls.
There are three orange and white boys and a buff and white boy. Any kitten who is not some shade of orange is a girl.
This worried-looking dilute tortie was the first in my lap.
This orange and white boy was the first to climb in there and check things out.
Ryder is like “I don’t know how this is your fault, lady, but it is.”
The kittens eat pretty well on their own (which doesn’t stop them from nursing whenever they can, of course.)
“Is the milk bar open, is it?”
Oh, those blue eyes. I love ’em!
Buff boy seems to have very strong leaning towards being da BAYBEE.
So, here’s the story: Forgotten Felines volunteer (and adopter) Steve noticed a mama cat moving kittens into a scrap metal dumpster a few weeks ago. Knowing that they were going to be removing the dumpster in the near future, trapping ensued. They got three kittens from the dumpster and then found the other SIX nearby. They were estimated to be about 2 1/2 weeks old at the time (it’s been a few weeks), and I have NO idea how Ryder kept those kittens fed and safe, but she obviously did. They all went to Steve’s for a few weeks while we waited for my foster room to open, and yesterday they came to me!
They’re about 6 weeks old (guesstimated date of birth 8/8), there are five girls and four boys. Three orange and white (boys), one buff and white (boy), a brown tabby girl, brown tabby and white girl, two tuxie girls, and the dilute tortie.
Ryder is absolutely skin and bones and eats nearly constantly. She’s a little wary of her new situation, but likes being petted, and she is such a sweet, pretty girl. She has done a fabulous job of keeping those kittens fat and healthy, and I look forward to getting to know them all over the next couple of months.

“Khal is very offended that you thought this house needed more kittens, lady. I thought we was done with that ridiculousness!”

Kittehs!! Mama Ryder seems to have a magnificent tail and her family is gorgeous!!
First of all, Khal is absolutely positively gorgeous!
Second, those babies are just precious. That tortie baby is stealing my heart with those sad eyes and being the first to climb into your lap. Next, the blue-eyed tuxie girl with the white muzzle pouch and chin. Gah.
Ryder is obviously an amazing mama. Bless her, she was working hard. Keep those groceries coming for her!
Oh, I cant wait to see more pix of them all, especially that tawny tabby girl who has tantalizing hints of the unsurpassably gorgeous Corbie (those black-tipped ears!) Sorry y’all, I’m feline a little iterative today.
Fall Full of Felines
Funny Ferocious Floofy
A Fabulous Fleet
It’s all good, but I t think the best part is to be able to feed that wonderful mamma cat all she wants to eat.
Kittens!!! Oh they’re adorable, I love them already!!
Kahl is so regal!
What a beautiful multi-coloured batch. Ignoring my love for torties, Mama Ryder is gorgeous and whether she birthed all dem babies herself of whether she adopted another mama’s, SHE IS A HERO!
I cannot wait to see her fatten up in your care and end up in a fantastic forever home where she never has to have babies again and can just be someone’s baby herself! <3
Wow. That is SuperMama right there. And some gorgeous babies! Looking forward to getting to know them.
She’s beautiful, and keep feeding that girl!
9 kittens,wow! That’s impressive.
Three (thousand) cheers for Steve!! So great that he took action and kept them for so long. And now we get to watch them finish growing up with Robyn… yay!! This is all great. Great!
I’m with everyone else: the babies are gorgeous and Mama Ryder is a rockstar. She hit the jackpot when she moved in with you. Looking forward to seeing her outer beauty as she gains weight.
It’s so wonderful to see you have kittens again. But gosh, viewing Ryder with NINE kittens just brings home more vividly the problem of cat overpopulation if they are left un-neutered. If one mama can produce that many babies and even a few are left unfixed, just imagine the rapid population growth, meaning more kitties out there that probably will live tough lives as ferals or risk being euthanized at kill shelters. So, though I adore kittens, and yours here are lucky, it makes me sad to think about.
More torties! Yay!
Well done, mama Ryder – your babies are beautiful!
Holy moly….nice save Steve!!!
Nine kittens and one mama? Why, Nona!!! (There’s a city/town in Mississippi (Winona, MS) from which I’m stealing that lame joke. Please forgive me.) I look forward to watching these grow and thrive!
What adorable babies, but I am most of all impressed with Mama Ryder! It’s no wonder she’s skin and bones, she was eating for TEN, and as a feral, that must have been tough.
But yay, another tortie! She is just beautiful. I’m so glad she’s going to have a great life now!
All so pretty! I don’t understand “Ryder”. What “naming group” does this presage? You want suggestions, don’t you?!?
How are you going to tell all those orange bebes apart?
I think “Fleet” is the theme. Ryder offers a fleet of rental vehicles. So do Avis and Hertz. But there are many fleets in the world, so this should be interesting. Speaking of worlds, there are also 9 planets* and our solar star, which could have been a nice throwback to this-time-last-year’s Mercury and her Missions, but who wants to be stuck with Uranus? (Mr. L&H, that was for you). Although, could use the Roman variants for a couple (like Aries for Mercury to sidestep the duplication). Too lazy to Google Uranus’ alternate appellation (Mrs. L&H, that was for you), anyone know off the top of their noggin? Tortie girl would make an adorable Venus. * I never stopped believing in you, Pluto! (Oooh, da baybee Pluto.)
What an amazing mama! And yay for Steve, too! I’m all excited about two tuxies, but that dilute tortie is so adorable, with her little worried face!
Whoa, 9 kittens! Sheeeet…that has to be a record. I’d say that Mama Ryder is a Superstar all right. Look at those sweet faces, I’m in love already!
Was Ryder already named when she moved in, or did you name her?
