So yesterday morning I decided that I couldn’t stand the idea of those babies rolling around on soiled bedding. It was driving me NUTS. So I suggested to Fred that we (he) put on welding gloves, shoo Katia out of the crate, and then he could scoop the babies out of the crate and I’d replace the bedding really quickly, and hopefully we wouldn’t end the day in the emergency room, maimed and bleeding.
Fred put on the welding gloves, and I unzipped the top of the crate.
I moved out of the way, and Fred reached in to shoo her out the front of the crate. She growled, hissed, and gave the gloves several hard smacks before running out of the crate and over to join her mother.
“I don’t think I like these people, Mama.”
Fred put the kittens in the pie plate scratcher.
Since Katia was staying over by her mother and didn’t seem inclined to attack, I asked Fred to hold each kitten up as he put them back, so I could take pictures. I took a lot of blurry pictures, but managed to get decent pictures of each kitten!
We didn’t take the time to sex them, but it went so well today that we’ll likely handle them again in a couple of days and see what we’ve got.
#1 appears to be all black. I didn’t see any white on him/her, but we were trying to get this done quickly, so I also didn’t take time to really look him/her over.
#3 is mostly black, but has a white goatee – s/he might have more white than that, but again: didn’t look that closely.
#4 is a tuxie, and is the one with the white tail tip, which you can kind of see in this picture.
Katia went right back into the crate after we left the room, and doesn’t seem particularly scarred by the experience, so I’d say it went well!

Sneaking a picture of Jake, who knows exactly what I’m doing.
Alice Mo in the sun. SUCH a pretty girl.

Aw, look at those wee little faces… Glad you were able to change the bedding. After 7 years of reading your blog, I know enough that not only would it make you cray-cray to leave the soiled bedding there, but it was starting to make me twitch thinking about it, too.
Love seeing Jake! Even though he’s about had it with the sneak pictures.
I noticed scratches on Fred’s hands…..compliments of whom?
Those babies are adorable. I will be praying that mama magically gets socialized and can be a spoiled family cat. Feral life is hard….
Those scratches are from Dewey. He gets overexcited when Fred rubs his belly. 🙂
Cheers to Team Anderson for accomplishing the mission of changing out the bedding and along the way getting some great pictures of the wee ones.
Once they start toddling off in four different directions, I bet that mama will settle down and may be open to some relaxin’ and chillin’ time…and could get to love life indoors and kind people.
Alice Mo is a gorgeous girl. Am I the only one who still plays her theme song whenever it appears?
Nope, gotta do it. Every time. Makes me smile every time.
It’s had 6,000 views, I’m pretty sure y’all are not alone (I also listen to it every time I go find it to link it!)
I do, too!
#4 is a mask and mantle baby like mine!
hopefully a little more time and she won’t try to kill you all. of course, a few weeks and those monkey will be moving around and coming to check you out too 🙂
Yes they will, and I can’t wait!!! 😀
They are adorable Robyn! Thanks for the start of wee baby pics. I appreciate you and Fred “risking your life” for them.
Katia is such a pretty girl. I hope she can calm down enough to be someone’s beloved family pet.
Kristi is just waiting to make sure you can tell her babies from Katia’s once the two litters are mixed, :). Love the pictures of the wee ones! Glad Katia didn’t seem overly stressed by the procedure. Maybe once Kristi has her babies and Katia sees that you can handle them without being a vicious cat destroyer, she’ll come around and tame down a bit. One can dream…
I agree – I think Katia will learn from Kristi that these humans are okay. Even if they do wear welding gloves!
OMG! Look at the toes on #4! Too, too cute
Glad to hear Katia didn’t seem too agitated by the violation of the sanctity of the crate once it was over. It’d be lovely if she’d learn you mean no harm and calm down with some time…though it’s not happened for me for the couple of feral mama’s I’ve had. You do have Kristi though which maybe will help…
Baby kitten faces! SQUEEEEE!!! I wouldn’t be able to stand not getting my hands on them.. lucky Fred
