For our Chewy product review this month (well it’s for June, actually, but I just could not get my act together!) we opted to review the Petsafe Funkitty Fishbowl.
It’s a fishbowl shaped toy that you put treats (or food) so that the kitties will have to work/play to get their treat (or food).
First, I tried it with the permanent residents. I put some treats in the bowl, sat it down in the kitchen, and called for the cats.
Alice came over, took a sniff, and noped on by. The princess does not work for her food, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Stefan was next, took a sniff, and decided he’d rather be petted, so came over and flopped down against me.
Dewey was the only other permanent resident around, and he stomped over, sussed out the situation…
then stuck his paw in and pulled out the treats.
Smart boy!
I actually took these pictures last weekend when Nola was still with us, as you’ll see in this next series of pictures.
Praline said “Why are there tasty treats in a place where I can’t get them in my mouth?”
Puzzled kittens.
The kittens wandered off, and Nola came over. I love the look on her face – “Are they paying attention? These treats are for MAMA!”
That LOOK she’s giving Praline is the best!
After thinking about it for a minute, she reached right in…
And got herself some treats.
NOM.
“Mama? You gonna share?”
“Just one?”
Poor long-suffering Nola.

I’d say it was a hit for the cats who figured it out! I haven’t had a chance to give it a try with the current fosters, but I suspect that the more food-driven ones will figure it out in no time flat. I think it’ll be a good tool to distract them so I can get out the door without one or more of them trying to leave with me.

2005: For the most part Mister Boogers left the kittens alone, though Oy kept going over and sniffing at him, and he could hardly stand it, and he would growl and raise his paw to smack that kitten across the room, but then I would say “Mis. Ter. Boog. Ers.” in my Mean Lady voice, and he’d put his paw back down and walk away.
The daughter of a friend made a treat dispenser out of a soda bottle. She used a pairing knife and cut 2-3 holes in it. I just drop some treats in and Simon rolls it around til he gets all the treats out. He loves it and it gives him something to do besides sleep.
That’s a smart idea!
Glad to see that they make these now. I had to make my own as all I could find were doggy enrichment toys. Liked those clear prune cylinders, perfectly round and soft plastic to cut. Also big lid to add more treats.
Really want to see more permanent residents with these. Sure we’ll get some puzzled can kitties.bless their hearts.
I’ll see what I can do! I have no idea where Jake was – he must not have been in the house, he always comes running when I call, just in case there’s food for him to eat.
Of course Queen Alice doesn’t work for her food. How absurd.
“Noped on by” — love that. It is now in my vocabulary. Hammy never met a food bowl or treat he did not like. The happiest day of the month is today… the Chewy .com box is coming today!!!!
