Stumbled across this comic on Sunday and it made me think of the infamous Stefan And The Snake video.
Ha! (And reading this comment reminded that it had been a while since I’d shared the Stefan/snake video, so I did so yesterday for one of my Throw Back Thursday posts!)

Hi! I have a question about neutering timing. I know your kittens get neutered before they go their homes and do great. My friend has a 4 month kitten and the vets don’t want to spay until she’s 6 months old. That seems awfully late. Do you know why some vets want to wait?
That’s a good question, and I’m not sure why some vets will spay/neuter at 2 pounds and others want to wait until 6 months. I’m sure they have their reasons, I just don’t know what they are. Kittens can go into heat as early as 4 months (I actually had a kitten go into heat at 11 weeks old, which just blows me away), so I feel like waiting until 6 months old is playing with fire.

Remind me — how old do you think Uhura is? Do you think she has had previous litters? She’s such a good mama!
We think she’s about 3 years old. I don’t think this is her first litter (it would be unusual for a cat that age to have not had a previous litter), but of course we don’t know for certain.
I will say that she is the MOST protective mama I’ve had. If her kittens hiss or howl, she is RIGHT THERE to check on them.

I love it when they discover the mirrors. Kirk keeps going back to look at himself (I can’t blame him. He’s awfully cute!)
Kirk and Troi were wrestling in the bed; I waved my hand in the air so they’d look at me, and I’m pretty sure Kirk thought he was going to be able to bite my hand. (He looks so pleased with himself.)
Janeway and Spock have a tussle.
I would just like to point out (again, in case anyone missed it) Uhura’s bowtie-shaped mustache. ADORABLE.
Janeway considers her next move.
Spock and Troi at the milk bar, Kirk in the Toastycat bed, and Janeway on the brass bed. Kes was across the room on the little cat tree.
Kirk is very, very pleased with himself.
Spock gives me the innocent eyes and is all “I wasn’t biting on the arms of this cute little pink chair. I’d NEVER.”
The adorably floofy belly o’ Kes.
Uhura is going for her spay next Wednesday (the 13th.) She went into heat last weekend; fortunately she went back out of heat pretty quickly. The first heat cycle after having kittens tends to be relatively short (a couple of days) and quiet (I could hear the occasional calling from the foster room, but it wasn’t loud enough that I couldn’t sleep through it), but each successive heat cycle is longer and louder than the one before. Hopefully she won’t go back into heat before Wednesday – fingers crossed!

Charlie gives me the Eyes o’ Lurve. He has many favorite places to snooze; this (in Fred’s office) is one of them.

Posted on social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr) yesterday.
Troi readies her slappin’ paw for the busy day ahead.
Kirk’s all “Well HELLO, good-lookin’!”

Throw Back Thursday: In 2012 we fostered Emmy, who had 4 kittens: Darwin, Logie, Newbury and Razzie. Razzie was born with a partial tail, and is the one you’ll see bouncing around at the beginning of the video before she decided to CLIMB INTO the track toy. (They were about 5 weeks old in this video.) I was sure she was going to be stuck and we’d have to take it apart to get her out, but she slid out on her own (and I removed that toy from the foster room.)
(Troi getting stuck in the Croc bed earlier this week made me think of this video, of course.)
Kes says “See? I told you! Everywhere I go, there she IS, taking my picture!” and Janeway says “I’LL take care of this.”
I’m a little scared, to be honest.

Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, where people threw buckets of ice on each or on themselves to promote awareness of ALS? We did the Mice Bucket Challenge instead with good ol’ Uncle Stefan to promote awareness of the need for daily nappin’.

Warning: This video contains a snake.
Throw Back Thursday: In 2016, Stefan brought me a present. The best parts of this video are (1) Stefan walking through the kitchen with the snake, (2) his proud “come see what I have brought you” meow, and (3) my scream at the end, then the long silent moment where I was staring in disbelief, and my yelling “FRED ANDERSON!” so Fred would come rescue me. (I don’t know what kind of snake that is, something non-venomous.)
Uhura’s keepin’ an eye on the children.
Good night innernets. (Spock found the crown bed.)

Have there been any applications to adopt Uhura? She is lovely and seems like she is so sweet.
No, but she isn’t officially available yet – she will be after her spay next week.
You have a possible caption without a pic. It’s the text after the first pic. I was hoping to see a smug Kirk…waiting to bite you?
I was never a fan of the real Kirk, but your boy has my heart…he’s adorable!
Thanks – it’s fixed! (And yes, he is very very cute. 🙂 )
The snake video should be an all-time favorite. It was hilarious. Do your cats still bring you gifts from the outside? My old cat was always bringing home lizards.
You know, it’s been a long time since we’ve gotten a gift from the outside. Our best hunters (Kara and Stefan) are gone now, and the remaining permanent residents just aren’t that interested in hunting.
The Stefan video is still great after all these years.
Yes it is!
Also, (the edit button seems to have vanished) the heat cycle lengths and frequencies of various animals are interesting. Went down a small rabbit hole. Thankfully, I am not an elephant.
Happy Star Trek Day to the Trekklings!
Re age for spaying/neutering: 40 years ago when I was in vet school, 6 months was standard timing. Part of the thinking was that the animal should be close to physical maturity. Also, techniques back then for surgery and anesthesia weren’t nearly as advanced as they are now so any procedures done on very young, small kittens and puppies were risky. Younger spaying and neutering started to be explored because of the pet overpopulation problem. Initially, there were lots of concerns about what that would do the animals as they matured. Would they be stunted? Would male cats have increased risk of urinary blockage because their urethras wouldn’t be as large? Eventually, studies showed that these concerns were unfounded and, as surgery and anesthesia techniques became more sophisticated, these surgeries became more accepted. But change can take a long time to happen and, if you’ve “grown up” with one set of expectations, it can be hard to change. Especially if it means you have to learn new techniques.
Thanks, Kathy! This explains a lot!
Thank you for this clarification! I have a neighbor driving me crazy because he is letting his very ballsy, almost grown kitten run around outside. He says his vet won’t neuter until he’s at least 8 months old. I’m having a very hard time not snatching Baby up myself and getting him fixed, cause those trouble nuggets are huge and I’m sure they are working!!
There are good articles you can find about early spay & neuter. Maybe print a couple and suggest he get a second opinion.
“Trouble nuggets” HAHAHA! Apt description.
Thanks for this response, Kathy!
That first picture of Kirk looking at himself in the mirror is just adorable! I love how he has his little paw half way up, like he’s about to try to touch that kitty in the mirror.
I was mentally hearing you yell “Fred Anderson!!!” when I heard about the ‘head in the Croc’ incident.
Don’t know what happened it was fine yesterday but it gives me this now

I’m in the process of upgrading my PHP and some of the plugins I’ve been using are giving errors. The ones you were seeing SHOULD be gone now!
Ah it’s back to normal I must of had bad timing lol
Razzie giving those terrifying skitterbug challenges – soooooo endearing and LOL!!! Thank you for the fun throwbacks :).
