From Susan, the Challenger’s House shelter manager:
Thanks so much to all of you Love-and-Hisses fans who sent contributions to Challenger’s House. Some of you have donated before but many were new contributors so thank you if you passed info on to other friends who love animals. It never ceases to amaze me how people from all over the world come to the rescue of those individuals & groups who sometimes just need a jump start to get back on track – no matter where they live. You guys are great!
Thanks again,
Susan
Once again, no adoptions over the weekend. SIGH.
Brandywine, Agata, Fianna, and Kennebec are off to the clinic tomorrow to be spayed and neutered. Now that Brandywine’s spending the better part of her day out in the house, I have no doubt that she’s been in a house before. Nothing about the house bewilders or startles her, and the first time I let her out to explore, she was completely calm about it. She even went toward the back door like she’d seen a cat door before, though when I shooed her away, she immediately left the laundry room. I know that she could go into heat at any time, and ALL I need is for her to do just that and escape into the back yard and over the fence. Better to have her spayed now instead of waiting.
Agata, Fianna and Kennebec are just now going because Fianna ย took her time getting to the 2-pound mark.
The ‘Maters are all over 2 pounds (Caspian’s just barely so), so it’s likely they’ll be going for their neutering next week, though I haven’t made the appointment yet.
Of course, given that adoptions are at a standstill, this doesn’t mean anyone’s going anywhere anytime soon!
Caspian’s a chatty fellow.
“-and I was following Mama around ’cause I love her, and when she stopped I tried to latch on ’cause I’m just a little boy and I need my nutrition, and then she turned around and hissed at me. She hissed!”
“So I turned around and smacked Wellington because poop rolls downhill or sideways or something, and someone else needed to feel my pain, and he BURST into tears.”
“And I laughed and laughed, and then Mama came over and gave me what-for, so I didn’t like THAT.”
“I don’t like it when Mama hisses at me.”
It’s a Stompypants in the sun.
I am sad to see that his eyes are starting to change. Why can’t they stay blue? Whyyyyyy?
He likes to sit in the sun and show off his whiskers.
But when he’s sleeping, he doesn’t care to be woken up, unless it’s with a kiss.
He sleeps a lot (um, he’s a cat! Well, a miniature cat.)
Kennebec would like to point out that there are OTHER pretty orange Taters in this house, not just that little whippersnapper, thank you very much.
And trying something different, he’s… snoozing.
“No, really. I won’t sink my claws into your hand! Would I do that?”
(He did.)
Maxi was glad to see some sunshine after a few rainy days.

Rain, what is this rain you speak of? We do no have such a thing here. Seriously, things in my yard are starting to die. It is very sad.
I was at a local Petsmart and two little baby kittens found new homes with the cutest little girl. She was so excited. The kittens put on a show for her and of course the cagey adoption lady mentioned how much better and fun it is to have two kittens so they can play together, have company, yada yada. Job well done. At least two found homes yesterday.
Caspian is my new favorite! I love chatty black kitties.
P.S. Beautiful Maxi!
Sorry to hear adoptions haven’t picked up yet. We were looking at our experience last year (since it’s been really slow here for the last few months also) and found that we had 25% of our adoptions last year in July. I remember we had one really huge weekend in mid/late July last year. And it has started to pick up for us, 3 of mine (2 older ones!) were adopted this weekend. I hope it soon starts to pick up for Challenger’s House also!
I feel like this same sort of thing happened back in 2008 when we had Kara and her babies, the adoptions dropped off to nothing for what seemed like forever. They’ll pick up again – they always do, knock on wood – but waiting for the dam to break is maddening!
First of all, I have to give a huge shout out to First Coast No More Homeless Pets here in Jacksonville, Fl. They put together a mega-adopt-a-thon last Fri-Sun. Animal Care and Protective Services (city shelter) and many many rescue groups from around the area participated. All animals were spayed/neutered and micro-chipped. By end of day (6 pm) yesterday, 920 dogs, cats and rabbits had been adopted. They all pretty much ran out of animals. Each day 300 – 500 people were waiting at the door (10 am) for the opening. ACPS (who I volunteer for) had all of their dogs and cats adopted. If you went to the shelter…silence. The only animals that remained were in the I-wing (where sick or URI dogs and cats are) and those still waiting to be spayed/neutered or are on hold for possible owner claims. That has never been the case before. We all know, that it will fill up to the max again shortly, but we are basking in the glory for now. We are trying hard to become a no-kill community and have all people educated about proper animal care and spay and neuter along with TNR programs for feral cats. FCNMHP – you rock! This is their website: http://www.fcnmhp.org/ I am adding it not as advertisement, but for information. Who knows who it could help repeat this process in their community! ๐
Now…Yay for Brandywine. This will really be a + with getting her a loving home! Caspianโs dialoge cracked me up!!!! Stompers is going to me adorable no matter what color his eyes are – yes, even though they were a gorgeous shade of blue. Yes Kennebec, that house is full of orange hunks of burn’n love!!! ๐ Wow, Maxi just glistens in the sunlight! Beautiful!!!
Uh….dialogue LOL
920! That is absolutely amazing!!!
I know!!!!! [wipes tear from eye]
This news report does not include Sunday’s adoptions:
http://www.news4jax.com/news/600-animals-adopted-at-Mega-event/-/475880/15519480/-/d16rbnz/-/index.html
I know the adoption cost was really low, but we were overflowing with pets (we had over 130 or so turned in one day after the storms). It was find them homes or make hard choices – choices no one wanted to make.
ooopsss… 108 turned in in one day.
Stompers is so adorable – I’m sorry to hear you’re having a slow time with the adoptions – will cross my fingers that things pick up for you soon.
When I view all the photos of kittens snoozing, it makes me sad that I have to go to work.
If you guys want some rain come over here to the UK and grab some, weve had enough..seriousley we’ve had enough the Olympics may contain rather more watersports than usual!!
I was in London the second week of May. Had just heard the warning by the weather folks that you were in for a drought. We had cold and rainy all week – but had a great time mind you!
My friends in the UK say it has not stopped raining since.
Here in Florida, we just got done with our rain….and lots of flooding!
We got almost 4 1/2″ over 3-4 days, and that seems to be the perfect amount – the lawn was dead and brown and now it’s coming back to life. On the down side, the humidity has really picked up, but I can live with that. Especially if I stay inside under the ceiling fan. ๐
We had flooding last year in Sept. and right now we are in a bit of a drought-go figure. One of these days Mother Nature will figure herself out and make things a bit more even for everyone. I hope!
Good luck tomorrow, Brandywine & Co.! Fingers crossed for you all and for a swift rise in adoptions for Robyn’s charges and all Challenger’s House wards. Great to see the charismatic Maxi, too. Do she and Rupert (love that sweet guy!) ever spend time together? They’d make a handsome pair.
Oh, they would!!!
They are often found in the same area of the yard, but they are not friends at all. Which is too bad, because how awesome would a snuggly picture of the two of them be? So awesome! ๐
Ebony and ivory, live together in perfect harmony…
[clicked like button]
For such a tiny kitten, how does Stompers manage to look so much like a little wrinkly old man? It’s like a cuteness super-power.
And Kennebec is my latest “Well, great, now I have to drive down to Alabama and adopt a cat” kitty.
Ha – he does kind of look like a little old man, doesn’t he? ๐
I love how Stompers has his whiskers going all over the place. He is such a hot little mess!
I so want that pict of stompers and his whiskers in the sun as my desktop background but it is too small a file size.. *sigh*
give him kisses for me..
You could click over to Flickr and download the original (huge) size. Or if that doesn’t work for you, let me know and I’ll send it to you!
That wee translucent nose, glowing in the sun!
Connie-are you not able to use the pictures within this post and “right-click” and then do “save image as..”? I do this and the pictures are all a reasonable size. I save them as Jpeg files into a folder I use only for screensaver pictures. I cannot save the pictures on Flickr for some reason.
STOMPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually they are all adorable, but Stompers tugs my heart strings….I may have mentioned that before. ๐
OH MY!!!!!
Theyยดre so sweeties!
Seriously, Robyn, how hard is it going to be to take little Stompers to be adopted? I love all cats, but there’s just something about this little guy. He’s adorable!!! ๐
Caspian, you are a brat prince. You need to be picked up and snorgled till you shut up.
I don’t get it, how can anyone not immediately fall in love with Logie?
Caspian? Chatty? I don’t see it… ๐
Stompers says a mouthful with his sweet little eyes!
You may have seen this on Twitter – one of the Fake AP Stylebook guys is in need of some help with his cats (and a fish), due to unforeseen circumstances. His story at http://chaosmonkey.com/post/27212494673/a-plea and the Fake AP Stylebook tweet about it: https://twitter.com/FakeAPStylebook/status/224918871465918465
Seems to be the season, no?
Love, love, love the Maxi picture. It is a purrfect October calendar picture.
Always sad when adoptions are down. We just took in two kittens from a stray momma cat that my MIL has been taking care of. And actually right now took the 3rd kitten while she heals from surgery. The plan is that he’ll go back with momma at my MIL’s house but that may change and we end up keeping him as well. We shall see.
