Meet the Dragons! Here they are, in order of birth.
A LOT of y’all lobbied to name the little orphan Jon Snow, but there’ll be a litter named after House Stark in the future, so I didn’t want to use the name now. I really like the names I ended up using; I hope you do too! (And if you don’t, you can secretly call them by another name. I’ll never know!)
And another shot of Ruth:
I know it looks like she might be a calico, but the fur that photographs as red is really more of a caramel-colored brown. It’s a lot like one of Corbie’s shades of brown. I could be wrong – it could turn more red as she grows – so we shall see. It’ll be fun to see how she turns out, won’t it?
If I walk into the room with Khaleesi’s plate of food and the babies are nursing, I put it in the crate with her so that she can eat while they nurse. She comes out of the crate from time to time for a break, and if I see her flopped down in the middle of the room (I glance in there whenever I go by the room), I go in and pet her. She has the loudest purr, that one.
The Dragons are doing well. Fred was a little worried about Norbert, who is smaller than the other kittens. But he’s nursing well and he’s gaining weight – he’s just a small guy, at least for now.
A couple of people mentioned that they thought the Dragons look bigger than they usually do at this age. They’re actually smaller than the Royals were at this point – in fact, Norbert just hit 4 1/2 ounces yesterday (at 4 days old), which is what Buttercup and Aslan weighed at 1 day old. The weight chart for the Dragons is at the bottom of their page (and the Royals’ weight chart is at the bottom of their page.) Khaleesi’s a pretty small cat, so maybe they just look bigger than they are by comparison.

Showin’ that toy mouse who the boss is.
Was I wildly waving a feather teaser over my head, do you suppose?
Trying to get all the kittens AND Kate in one picture is going to be the death of me.
“THIS MY CAT TREE! YOU GO ‘WAY!” (I know it looks like Charming is three times bigger than Buttercup here, but it’s the angle. He’s bigger, but not THAT much bigger.)
“Madame, I don’t believe I care for your tone.”
Kate spent a good amount of time wandering around the house this weekend. So far, so good. She’s REALLY interested in the goings-on in Khaleesi’s room, and will often sit right outside the door. I think she can hear the babies in there and she’s curious.

I tried to go to bed the other night, and Stinkerbelle was on my bed shooting Tommy the crazy-eyed looks of love. When I walked over to the bed, she hissed at me. HISSED. At me. I was all “Look, YOU. That is MY bed and I will sleep there if I want to! But lucky for you I prefer to sleep on the couch for now. Please let me know when you’re vacating the premises. THANKS.” Yeah, I told HER.

Those are the BEST names!!
Puff’s head looks bigger than the rest. Camera angle? Or he’s the brainiac of the litter??
I agree! They couldn’t be more perfect!
Our cats are named Bran & Jon Snow. Look how cute they are

Obviously the white one is Jon
Aww, they certainly ARE cute!!
They are ADORABLE!!!
I am so glad that Puff is Puff, lovely silver kitty and the perfect name for a gray bit of smoke! While Ruth was a white dragon, I think he’ll enjoy having a little girl colored dragonette named after him – it will be interesting to see if she is a calico, I thought so from the birth pictures but it can be hard to tell at this age.
I’d keep an eye on Scorch, Robin. He’s already a spitfire! And I predict Norbert will become the sentimental favorite, welcomed into the clan as he was. All hail Khaleesi, mother of dragons, and Robin, foster mother of dragons.
I love the names. Ruth was a dragon off many colours (very faint patches of all the normal dragon colors) so if she turns out calico, all the better π Puff and Ember are purrrrfect (a puff of smoke and little embers a’glowin’). Technical quibble – isn’t Norbert the actual first π
And the Royals just keep developing personalities in loads.
And you certainly let Miz Stinkerbelle who’s boss
Good point – Norbert IS the first. I guess I should have said I was listing them in the order they joined the family. I’ll always think of him as being born 4th!
So,so cute! I can’t believe there are only 5. That belly was huge, thought sure there would be a couple more.
Do you think Khaleesi realizes that Norbert (I started to type Jon Snow–sorry!) is not really hers? It doesn’t really matter, but I tear up whenever I think of that poor orphaned, TINY baby boy. I’m so happy you and Khaleesi were there to help!
As far as I can tell, she thinks he’s hers. She doesn’t treat him any differently. I mean, obviously I don’t know what she’s thinking, but she’s certainly willing to feed, groom, and love him. π
A MINOR quibble in the naming of The Dragons: in the Pern books, Ruth is a boy. Which always struck me as weird, but then there was a LOT about the Pern books that was weird… But Norbert is a PERFECT name for the little orphan since, after all, Hagrid wasn’t exactly that dragon’s real mommy, either. π
I did realize that Ruth was a boy – but decided not to stand on technicalities. π
Technically Norbert(a) wasn’t a boy! Maybe Ruth and Norbert should switch names. π
Ruth is only a female name here on earth. On Pern, where the white dragon Ruth lives, all dragons are hatched knowing their names and they always end in “th”. Ruth is just another th name like Mnementh, Ramoth, Canth, and Path. And he happens to be male. Sort of. He never rose to mate when he got mature, so he’s a bit gender-less.
So happy to see Ruth represented in this litter of dragons. All the names are wonderful!
Already in love with Norbert!!! Awwww!
Take care
x
ohhhhh…. I want to move to crooked acres! All those wee little babehs… HEAVEN! (I would even help scoop) Motherhood agrees with both Kate and Khaleesi – is it just me or have both gotten more gorgeous??? I admit to already having quite a very large soft spot for Norbert… his story… he’s a tuxie… I am defenseless. Those Royal offspring just keep turning up the cute… In the first picture where you’re off camera waving DaBird, it looks as though the three at the top of the pic are all formally attired with regal jabots (lace collars) and have added ‘frilly white cuffs’ to their ensembles – – how very regal indeed! I do admit to jonesing on Sunday but to cure it, continually hit the Random button (you can’t see who uses it can you? face. palm. shame.) I somehow got to your post with the house tours on it… oh my – Miz Poo as a kitten!!! As for Stinkerbelle hissing… well, what’s a girl to do when in the midst of infatuation, another girl – and this one with opposable thumbs that can open cans of cat food – encroaches on her shared space with Tommy the God of Lurrrrrrve????
Ha – no, I can’t tell who clicks the “random” button over and over. Click all you want! π
Yay! I was hoping you used Norbert and I’m glad that’s the little orphan guy’s name. I also love Ruth. That’s my Grandmother’s name and she said she’s always loved calicos so I think that is a PURRFECT name for her. I’m going to take one of your pictures and send to my dad’s cell phone so he can she it to Gram. He’s with her in PA (she doesn’t have any computer crap or internet). I love them all, but there’s something about that little Ember. Maybe it’s the Spanky resemblance. But she had me at meow. π
Love the names! They’re really good ones. and the baby faces! So precious!!
How did Khaleesi do with the babies first individual photo shoot? You’ve mentioned she’s a little more protective than some you’ve had so I was wondering how she would do with this. As you didn’t mention she bit you, I’m guessing it all went well, but was just wondering!
Love the Norbert name and story, but think Ember and Puff will be my personal favorites in this litter.
She did great, actually. She was really nervous the first couple of days, but she’s relaxed a lot and doesn’t seem at all bothered when we handle the babies.
OMC! They are so so so adorable and charming!
Purrrrrrs
Amazing pictures as always, Robyn. I have a feeling there will be the best Kitten Calender ever this year!
Love the dragon names! I am surprised Puff wasn’t already used by Challenger House. Glad that it was available because that grey baby just looks like a Puff.
awww – cuteness overload for a Monday morning….
thank you for the ear worm..

The key thing to look for on Ruth to determine the brown tabby versus torbie issue is an orange stripe. All the stripes on a brown tabby will be black.
Another thing you might want to keep an eye on is the sex of the Orange Van kitten and the Grey Tuxie. If they are both girls then odds are very high they had different dads.
We double checked this afternoon – just out of curiosity – and the Orange and white is definitely a girl, and the gray tuxie is definitely a boy.
I’m not seeing any orange stripes on her, but I don’t think I’ve actually seen her whole body since she’s usually half blocked by one of her siblings.
AGGGGH! THOSE NAMES ARE PERFECT!
Sorry, for some reason this litter makes me scream a lot. π
I understand that completely. π
As a Harry Potter fan, I am thrilled you chose to name one Norbert. And how appropriate that it be the orphan kitten, because Harry Potter was an orphan, too!
I can see now I will be coming back to this post many times in the next few days. I always love the first face pictures of the new kittens. I can’t wait for the “plink” plink” of the eyes. Wonderful names for all the little dragons.
Even if Ruth does not turn out to be a true calico she will still be gorgeous with the way the colors are around her eyes and nose. You say that the pictures are showing her colors to be more red but they do look a lot like Khaleesi’s colors. When I photographed my calico Ladybug her orange colors showed up very red at times too. http://catoftheday.com/archive/2007/February/21.html This is her Cat of the Day page.
Aslan is gets better looking every day. He is going to break a lot of hearts one day. I loved the picture of Jareth on his Mama. He definitely has his mother’s looks.
YAY!!! A fellow “Cat of the Day”!!! Here’s my Romeo’s (RIP, still miss him – and why I have such a soft spot for tuxies… Norbert, I’m tawkin to ya!) http://catoftheday.com/archive/2009/December/30.html
Romeo is very handsome !!! My two other cats are black and white tuxies, one long hair one short hair.
Louise’s last paragraph says it all, though I’d add that Scorch’s white mask is very much rocking my world. These ten kittens and their mums had already improved my day, and then Stinkerbelle making herself perfectly clear multiplied the bliss. Lucky I have two very silly and sweet grown-up cats to tear me away from Crooked Acres kitten and human heaven. Thanks for sharing these babies with us, Robyn, and I appreciated your putting the Targs in order of birth — very Game of Thrones!
I am guessing miss Ruth will be a calico tabby like her beautiful mom.
How much does Khaleesi weigh? Against the babies she does look so small!
I just weighed her this afternoon – she’s 7 pounds, 13 ounces.
Oh my God… IΒ΄m in love! Absolutely in love!
In the Earthsea trilogy written by Ursula Kroeber LeGuin there a dragon whose name is very close to Ember. Orm Embar β A powerful dragon of the West Reach descended from Orm.
Whee… hi there Dragon babies!!! LOVE, love all of the names!!
And that picture of Jareth leaning on Mama Kate — I gotta go make that one a favorite π
Perfection! ‘Fraid I can’t write much more after a rough day today…but these pictures are absolute therapy for me. Please thank the mamacats for me for having such beautiful kittens…and thank YOU for such wonderful names for Khaleesi’s kitlings!
how does Khaleesi react when you touch her babies? she loves you SO much, i am wondering if she cares too much or not. does she hiss, or just watch, ready to defend her babies if she needs to? and I do wonder about ruth – do calicos ever have that M on their forehead usually reserved for tigers? I am sure you are right – she is not a calico, she seems to have that M… hm. I wonder. they are all SO stinking cute. I just can’t stand it. SO CUTE.
She just watches – she was pretty nervous the first couple of days, but she’s relaxed a lot. It probably helps that when we do handle them, we do it very quickly, so there’s not too much screaming from the kittens.
Although; Khaleesi seems to have the “M’ to really, to the same degree little Ruth does… π
Just thought I’d point this out.

Awww, that is awesome!!!
I love “Norbert” so much. Is there any chance he’ll turn out to be a girl and have to be re-named Norberta? π
Ha – I don’t this so, we double-checked this afternoon. But you can call him Norberta and pretend he’s a girl if you want, it won’t hurt anything. π
