Since it’s Toesday…
When I got Crumpet at the end of January, I didn’t really look at her feet. It didn’t occur to me to do so, she didn’t like having her feet touched, and so I didn’t really think about it.
Fast forward to the end of February, when I was taking pictures of her in the crate with the kittens. When I was looking through the pictures later, I could see the pads of one of her front paws, and it looked really rough. Fred came upstairs and held her – the idea was that I would be able to get a closer look at her feet, but she was NOT on board with our nonsense, so I ended up taking pictures to look at.
This is what her paw pads looked like then:
I talked to Michelle about it. She said she thought it was caused by Crumpet living rough on the street – we have no idea how long she was out there fending for herself, after all – and that it would improve in time. She suggested some medication that might help, but I didn’t really want to give meds to a nursing mama if I didn’t have to. Her feet didn’t appear to actually bother her, she was moving around fine, so I opted to wait.
I started adding a squirt of salmon oil to her canned food for one feeding a day – affiliate link for reference, but you can find salmon oil in most pet stores and department stores, and Chewy online too, of course.
This is what her paw pads look like now.
SO much better! I don’t know if it’s the salmon oil that helped, or the canned food, or just being inside and cared for – or all of those, probably it’s all of those – but it’s nice to see those lovely pink pads. She still doesn’t particularly want me to touch her feet, but she’s less vehement about it (just gives me a disappointed look and pulls her paw away).

Pita bunny-kicking a smiley toy, and she’s not sorry.
4 of the 5 kittens under the blanket on the couch. I guess Ciabatta made it look especially cozy and the others decided to give it a try, too.

Mama’s giving me the crazy eyes. “I just wanted to hang out on the cat tree and ALL THESE KITTENS followed me!”

Posted on social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr) yesterday.
Rabbit rabbit rabbit. 🐰 (Crouton) From Wikipedia: “Rabbit rabbit rabbit” is a superstition found in Britain and North America wherein a person says or repeats the words “rabbit”, “rabbits” and/or “white rabbits” aloud upon waking on the first day of a month, to ensure good luck for the rest of it.
Look who it is! That is Sakana (formerly M’Lynn, mama to Shelby and the Magnolias2023), who was adopted just a few months ago.
Amy says: “Just a quick update, Sakana is doing great! Her favorite spot is sitting on the back of my chair. She has the best/loudest purr. I haven’t caught her and Truffles snuggling or anything, but they are often near each other and not fighting, so things have calmed down a lot since Sakana joined the family. She is such a great human cat, she follows me around and wants to be close all the time. No more hiding under the bed. She is the best!”
(Thanks, Amy!)
NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CRUMPET. Read her description (below) and email Forgotten Felines of Huntsville at info (at) ffhsv.org to inquire.
OUT OF AREA ADOPTIONS are allowed, but adopters must come here to Huntsville, Alabama to complete the adoption since Crumpet doesn’t have her license yet.
Crumpet (DOB 1/24/22) had been hanging around outside an area school (where she was likely dumped), obviously pregnant and desperate for help. She was trapped and brought into foster at the end of January, and after a timid beginning she warmed up and decided that the indoor life was pretty darn nice. She gave birth to five kittens on February 5th, and has been a wonderful mother to them. Now that her kittens are mostly raised, it’s time for her to find her forever home where she can be the baby herself.
Crumpet is a little bit of a scaredy cat and can be timid at first. We assume that she’s been through a lot in her young life, and it takes her a little while to learn to trust, but she’s such a love bug that her need for attention allows her to get past her fear. She loves to be petted – we can not stress this enough, LOVES to be petted! – and will let you pet her for a good long time as she walks back and forth and rubs against you. She has a very sweet purr that she turns on as soon as you start petting her. She will flop down against your leg or near you – she hasn’t been a lap cat yet in her foster room, but that very well might change as she grows more comfortable (and doesn’t have a passel of kittens to worry about.) She loves to curl up in a basket, on a soft bed, or even in the middle of the floor and just hang out. She’s learning to be playful as her kittens get older – she likes to bunny-kick stuffed toys, really likes catnip, and has a favorite toy in the form of a catnip-filled green bean (and yes, that will go home with her, along with a couple of extras.) She has not been around other adult cats in her foster home, but with a slow introduction, she should do fine with other cats. She also has not been around dogs, but would likely be fine with nice dogs.
Crumpet will be spayed on April 9th and can go home soon after.

The kittens are racing around like crazy things (how unusual!) and Crumpet is getting her ‘nip on. I think it’s safe to say that that girl loves her catnip.
Good night innernets. (Ciabatta)

I adopted a handsome big tomcat named Boo, and his paws looked like that when I got him. He had been indoors in a shelter situation, but it’s taken about a month and a half for his paws to start looking more ‘normal’ and soft. I think it is mostly the indoors, good food and care that does it. 🙂
What a wonderful improvement in Miss Crumpet’s paw pads! She is such a pretty little mama, and hopefully she will soon be in her forever home, being a pretty little “baby”.
Wow!! What an improvement in Crumpet’s paws – amazing and wonderful 🙂
Also – burrowing under and being “trapped” by a sofa blanket (albeit a soft one) doesn’t bear thinking about for me, but these kittens sure do love it, don’t they!
(Mind you, I’m always mystified by people who want a tightly made, foot-trapping bed, or who use those horrific looking mummy-style sleeping bags that taper down to be so narrow at the feet… yikes.)
I can’t stand being trapped – Frankie used to insist on sleeping between me and the edge of the bed and of course I’d let him (I’m not a monster), but it drove me crazyyyy.
