Margeaux has been hanging out in the crate, encouraging kittens to join her, grooming them, and letting them nurse (though I don’t know that they’re actually getting milk from her.) Her appetite has dropped off considerably. No contractions yet (but I’ve annoyed her by staring at her belly constantly.) I predict we’ll have kittens within 48 hours (if not tonight), and I’m requesting a relatively small (and even) number. 4 sounds good to me. (Please note: I could be wrong; I usually am when it comes to this, despite having fostered multiple pregnant cats in the past.)

HI innernets!
Judging by her appetite, I’m thinking tonight won’t be the night she births those babies.

Katriane is the fun mama.
Sneaky little ninja Margeaux birthed 6 kittens (gray and brown tabbies) between 2:30 and 5:00. All are doing well – nursing, vigorous and squirmy. I’m leaving them alone for a few hours before I swoop in and take more pics. The big kittens are curious but staying out of the crate.
We have a hisser! This one is clearly a prodigy, they usually wait a day or two before they get tired of me. (Yes, it was a hiss. All the newborn litters I’ve fostered have at least a few hissers. I don’t know why they do it, I assume it’s instinctual. They usually stop around the time their eyes open. Yes, someone will be along shortly to tell me I’m wrong and stupid and those aren’t hisses. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Good night, innernets. (Antoine)
I weighed the babies and made them cry, thus earning me this look from Margeaux.

If you don’t read the blog, you won’t have seen these yet: here’s a close-up view of each of Margeaux’s kittens. I haven’t named them (sticking with the French names theme) because we haven’t sexed them, and we won’t sex them ’til they’re at least a week old, ’cause that’s just how we roll. They actually look pretty different from each other, but until I can tell them apart at a glance, 4 of the 6 have little dabs of fingernail polish on their left ears. (I need to be able to tell them apart because I weigh them twice daily at this age to be sure they’re gaining as they should. So far, so good!) They’re doing well – nursing, wiggling, sleeping, and gaining weight.

Human booping kittens, kitten booping human.
If Margeaux’s kittens look bigger already, it’s for good reason: they’re bigger. Assuming all goes well (and it’s going very well), kittens double their weight in the first week. These little ones have increased their total body weight by 25% already, which means they’re well on the way.
My goodness Francois is a cutie.

Skitterbugs.
Margeaux’s kittens are 3 days old, and they’re filling out nicely. The lightest kitten (the one with the blue dab on his/her right ear) now weighs 4.5 ounces (3.3 at birth), and the heaviest (the brown tabby with no nail polish on his/her ear) now weighs 5.6 ounces (3.7 at birth). Aren’t they some cuties? (No, they are not named yet and won’t be until they’re at least a week old.)
