Okay, so, the story on Reacher.
First, I have to tell you a sad back story. Do you remember Maura? We had her about a year ago, got her while I was recovering from my hysterectomy. We thought she was pregnant, but as it turned out, she was never pregnant, was just a bit tubby and enjoying the attention and extra food she was getting from we morons who thought for sure she was going to drop those babies ANY moment.
Kathy adopted Maura in May and took her home to Birmingham. Maura settled in quickly, and things were going just fine (Maura was a total lovebug). And then, sadly, Maura passed away unexpectedly while I was in Maine last July. I got the email from Kathy while I was in Maine, and I intended to write about her when I got home, but I never did.
So that is very sad news, but it does lead to good news: Kathy and her husband decided that they were ready to adopt again, and I suggested Reacher because I fully believe that once he’s past his fear of being in a new home, he will reveal his sweet loving nature – like I’ve told Kathy repeatedly, Reacher is a lover of people AND cats; not surprising, since he’s grown up in this house where kittens come and go regularly. Kathy has a boy cat, Beau, who needs a friend, and I think that once things have settled down they’ll end up the best of friends.
And, of course, if for any reason it doesn’t work out, Reacher will always have a home with us.
The good thing about this, of course, is that I can harass Kathy for updates on how Reacher’s doing! And you know I’ll be sure to pass it along to y’all.
Kathy arrived around 7:30 last night to pick up Reacher. As soon as she stepped through the door, Reacher vamoosed. I sent Fred upstairs with the carrier to get him while Kathy signed the adoption papers. We talked for a few moments, and in that time Reacher went from trying to dig his way out of the carrier to laying down and looking fairly relaxed.
I missed him as soon as he was gone, but I know he’s going to a great home and I think he’s going to be very happy.
I snapped a few last pictures of him, of course.
A last snuggle with the princess.
Tommy makes sure he’s spiffied up for his new mom.
And an absolutely terrible picture I snapped, right before they left.
And then there was one (Bookworm). Corbie wonders if this means he gets Reacher’s snackin’?
Princess Alice of Smugonia, hoggin’ the Permanent Residents section of the posts. Smugly.

I’m sorry to hear about Maura! She was such a happy furball! I’m sure Reacher will be happy in his new home once he settles in. The photo of him with head and ears up in his carrier means that he will make the adjustment, I think.
Thanks for the photos of him saying his kitty goodbye’s and the lovely shot of Princess Alice. She isn’t hogging, she is just receiving her due as a permanent member of your family!
I’m very sad to hear about Maura. She was very lovely, and I had a special thing for her when I saw her. Still, I’m very glad that she had such love-filled end days, and I’m even gladder that her parents have re-adopted THE REACHER!!
happy endings all round ๐
So sad to read about Maura, I loved her!
“ain’t no babies here, lady…”
So sad about Maura. Just last week I looked back at some of the entries from when she was with you, and wondered how she was doing. She sure was a sweet kitty.
I hope Reacher and his new brother adjust without too much hisssing and smacking!
Wonderful about Reacher *cuddles him*. Poor sweet Maura, though! I was reading entries about her just a few days ago, and good gosh what a sweet kitty she was. Do they have any idea what happened there, why she… you know?
No, they were too distraught to think of asking for a necropsy. I know that when she was here, we had a hard time getting her past the diarrhea she was having, and I know that Kathy had to deal with it, too. I think there was just something wrong internally that wasn’t obvious.
In her blog, Kathy mentions Maura had giardia and roundworms. Roundworms can do damage to the lungs and also can obstruct the intestines. It could have also been that her intestines were weakened by the infections and she had some internal bleeding. Or her death may have been completely unrelated to the infections. It’s really hard to say what killed her, but it is very sad that she died.
We can take some comfort in the fact that she had such a happy life at Robyn’s and Kathy’s, though!
*hugs you, hugs Kathy* Poor sweet Maura-kitty. ๐ I feel insensitive in the extreme for asking that question, now.
Oh, so sorry to hear about poor sweet Maura…I remember her, and how funny it was when her belly kept growing, not from kittens (as we all thought) but from all the extra snacks she was getting…sweet sweet girl.
Yay for Reacher going to his new home! I hope he remembered to pack his brand spanking new couture going-home vest before he left for his new forever home ๐ As for Princess Alice, well, that is one heck of a “I’m Daddy’s Princes” look on her face ๐
Oh, Maura. If ever a cat deserved a break, it was you sweet girl. So glad you had a couple of good mommas in your short life.
I bet Reacher will bloom in his new home. He is such a beauty.
Oh I’m sad to hear about Maura. She was the most adorable cat, and had the best story. Her little scheme to get more food from you! Smartest cat ever!
I’m glad to see Reacher going to a new home! He’s such a pretty cat. I feel bad for Corbie being the last of the Bookworms, but he seems pretty content to be at your house, and I Know you guys care for him.
OH Robyn. I’m sorry about the hysterectomy – I didn’t know. I hope you are ok? Big big hugs!
Oh Maura!! She was the first foster kitty I met here last year when I first started blogging. Maura – whom you thought was pregnant but wasn’t! She was such a beauty!! ๐
But I’m so glad that Reacher has gone to this wonderful couple!!!! Yay for Reacher!!!! Yet it’s so sad to see him go!! And now we have beautiful Corbie! AWWWWW!!!
Princess Alice is just adorable! Adorable!! Take care
x
Thank you, Old Kitty, I’m just fine. It was a year ago, I’ve fully recovered. ๐
Oh, no. I loved Maura. ๐
Oh Robyn I am so sad to read about sweet Maura – I remember her so well. I am so sad that she had to leave but I am so happy that she had so much love for the short time she was here – with you, with Kathy and from all of us who got to meet her through the blog.
And well, it is good that out of the sadness comes some happy news that Reacher is going to a wonderful new home! And well, of course we fully expect you to post any updates you get for us – so we can keep up too!
snort – Princess Alice of Smugonia! Is that next to the Principality of what-cha-ma-call-it that Anne Hathaway gets to to rule in ‘The Princess Diaries’? Nice!
Vale Maura, sweetheart, & Happy Homes Reacher Man.
Well done Robyn & Fred.
Oooh I’m going to miss Reacher sooooo much!!
And hearing about Maura made me sad. She was such a special cat.
