Who’s the cat that’s not doing as well as you thought with the move?
He’s doing okay now, but for two – almost three – days after we brought the cats home, Newt hid in the fireplace, behind the logs. Given that he’d been so laid-back at Crooked Acres, to the point where he wasn’t running off and hiding from strangers, I just expected him to handle it better. He’s adapted and nowadays spends all his time flopped out in the middle of the floor or in the middle of Fred’s bed or mine.
Really, when it comes down to it, they’re all handling it better than we had any right to expect!
(Of course, just hours after my post published yesterday, Archie decided that he’d had enough of everything and started picking hissy-growly no-contact fights with Stefan and Maxi. BRAT.)

Question, what kind of brush do you use on long haired cats? I have a floofy community cat Iβm tending, and he needs brushing.
Connie said: I have several long haired cats and each one responds to different brushes.. The only way to know is to buy several and see what works.
Fred uses a plain old slicker brush on Khal (like such), but your mileage may vary!

Is there enough space for one of the guys to be able to lie behind the sink in front of the window box in the kitchen?
There is, though they really just sit and look out the window before moving along. I haven’t seen anyone snoozing there, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time!
Kara was sitting in the box looking at the back yard, but had to come running over to me when she saw me.

Will you be scanning the cards you’ve received this year? I love going through them and seeing the different cards and I love when I spot mine among them.
I will! I’m hoping to start scanning them over the weekend.

You mentioned you love all the paint colors – does that include the blue in the closet? Not that it’s bad – it just seems like it was selected by a different person π
Oh lord, no β I do not care for that paint in the closet. When we hardwood the closet floor, weβll (well, *I*) will repaint the walls, too. Also, itβs got a popcorn ceiling that needs to be de-popcorned.

Wow, Khal Drogo certainly looks magnificent lounging on his settee! Is the Khal also benefiting from a heating pad?
and
In that Khal picture I see a cord (at least I think it’s a cord and not a toy). It got me to thinking because I know you have electric blankets turned on for the kitties-How do they not CHEW all the cords? I could not do that around here.
Khal was indeed laying on a heated bed in that picture. For the cords, go here and check out my advice on how to cover your cords. I don’t have a problem with the permanent residents chewing on cords, but most of them are, and all the cords in the kitten room are always covered because you KNOW how kittens are.

Seeing Khal play warms my heart and I love that he’s staked a claim on that bed. Do you guys have any kind of guesstimate on how old he is?
We think he’s about 3 1/2 – I’ve got a date of birth on him of 5/12/14, so the vet probably aged him as being around 3 when we had him neutered earlier this year.

Whatβs with Maxiβs shaved paws?
She had a dental cleaning and had 4 teeth pulled while they were being boarded at the vet, while we were moving out of Crooked Acres and into Shady Cove.

Fred’s bed. That’s Khal in the back, Stefan over to the right, Dewey in the middle behind Jake, and Kara on the left.
Kara hanging out on the shelves in Fred’s room. She WAS just laying there chilling out, but when she saw me she had to get up and run over to me. Because she is a ruiner of pictures.
Sheriff Mama has pretty much made the kitchen island her own. The better to see everything from, my dears.
Jake, Alice and Khal. Have I mentioned that Fred’s bed is a favorite spot in the house? It gets a lot of sun!

Robyn, I use the same sort of slicker brush on my long haired cats. I find that it works well getting out any tangles before they become mats! π
Great pics. I, too, find the blue paint in the closet not he best of….choices. It is odd. I hate it when closets are neglected. I am ok if someone painted the room blue but kept the closet builder bone neutral. But NOT the other way around. If you wood or tile your floor (or replace the carpet) the closets matches the flooring of the room. If you go to all the trouble to remove the popcorn ceilings in the home, include the closets. Seriously, did that really save them THAT much money? Grrrrr.
Enough of homes…. Great kitty pictures. So glad to see Khal doing well. Kara is such a dear. I do think two kitty beds would fit nicely behind the kitchen sink. π LOL
If I weren’t afraid the beds would get wet from water splashing from the sink, I might consider it! π
I need to take a picture of the hall closet (which is also carpeted.) This house was built in 1989, and I’m pretty sure the carpet in that closet is original.
Before my mom sold her house, she was renting it out. One of the renters decided to paint a 3/4 wall that separated the kitchen from the living room a very similar color to the one in your closet. It was hideous! I don’t blame you for wanting to paint it.
Maybe it’s because I lived in base housing ’til I was 12, but I don’t get renters who would feel okay make that big of a change!
A former roommate of mine at one point got all fired up to paint the living room and wanted to use a particularly dreary shade of blue-gray (which I named You Sank My Battleship gray while I was being a jerk about it). I didn’t have any real say since she owned the house, but thankfully I was able to convince her to use a happier shade of blue.
It always made me feel as though all was right in the world when my cats would all sleep/hang out in close proximity to one and other. Seeing various Permies hanging out together on Fred’s bed is awesome – I have to imagine that it’s not the norm? I would have thought Kara would not have been interested in mingling with civilians, and that Alice took over the Stinkerbelle mantle of not mixing with the peasants. And Khal Drogo looks so chill with his bros! I’m so happy that all has gone so smoothly for you both!!!
(Love the Kara-loaf picture!)
It wasn’t the norm at Crooked Acres, but it’s turning into the norm here! Something about the bed in Fred’s room and mine (maybe because they smell familiar?) really attracts the cats!
I have a new appreciation for Kara, seeing how sweet she’s being all indoors and everything. Has she gotten her badge for ticketing offenders in her new territory yet?
She just bopped Alice on the head for getting too close to a piece of turkey Fred had given her, does that count? π
I nearly fell of my chair seeing the Sheriff co-mingling on the bed with everyone else! lol… she’s so adorable and I bet a kitty bed in the kitchen window would allow her to more comfortably survey the perimeter of her new jurisdiction. π π
That girl, I tell you what – she is so high energy that she spends her days flitting back and forth. So to see her at rest for a moment is unusual!
Is it just me, or does Sheriff Mama look like she’s hovering, about a quarter inch above the island?
Haha – I hadn’t noticed that, but it certainly does!
It makes me happy to see Khal being an indoor kitty! I really didnβt think that would every happen! (Also – I agree with CCR in MA – it DOES look like the Sheriff is floating just a tiny bit above the island!)
love seeing Alice all crashed out on the bed….gotta go where the sun is at π
Khal on Fred’s bed looks like he is giving you the evil eye… like… OK ladee, enuf wit da pix… time for naps.
Something I have been wanting to ask. How many litter boxes do you have, and where do you keep them?
Oh, good question! I’ll save this for next Friday’s post. π
Kara is such a love bug!! And I’m glad Newtles is settling in now.
Be careful about the sun and Fred’s comforter. I bought a new blue comforter for my guest bed this spring, which is in a prime sunny spot for the cats. But the first time I pulled it off to wash it, it had already faded where it was closest to the window. I now keep an off-white throw on that end of the bed. π
Thanks for the tip! (But to be honest, I’m not that crazy about Fred’s comforter. If it were sun-faded, that would give me a good excuse to replace it!
Holly is also a ruiner of pictures. I can’t tell you how many adorable pictures she’s ruined just because she thought she needed to come running over to me mid-shot.
Thank you so much for being my “Go To” fix on cats and kittens. I really appreciate how you are sticking it out. Once having a blog, I recognize how onerous it might be but it really makes a difference to look at those sweet faces.
Merry Christmas to one and all at Shady Cove
Merry Christmas! π
I thought Aurora, Telstar & Belle had been adopted. How come you still have them at PetSmart on your side bar?
Because the sidebar always needs to be updated and I’m a slacker. π
I have the same brush and Simon LOVES it. He’s a short hair but it’s a double coat and he sheds alot. I like that this brush is self cleaning. I think, if Simon had thumbs, he would grab the brush and do it himself (he’d do Lots of things if he had thumbs).
I need help trying to get him to loose weight. He gets 1/2 a 3oz can of food am & pm. Then he gets 1/2 cup of dry at bedtime. I’d end the dry but he would cry and pester me all night. He doesn’t play much, maybe 5 minutes a day and now he’s having problems jumping. I’m going to switch food from Pro Plan to Blue Buffalo and I’d like to eliminate the dry food altogether.
Any suggestions?
Hi Cheryl,
What canned food do you have him on? Try to get something higher in protein, and grain-free if possible. With dry food, do a slow reduction, and as you do, increase the amount of canned food you give him. How old is he? And how much does he weigh? Most kitties should not have issues jumping, so sometimes age (arthritis) or weight (obesity) can do it. I had one cat who was 19.5lbs when I got her, and she is now 15lbs. I got her off the dry food she had been on, and got her moving around a bit more, and slowly went from crappy canned food to good, and then to a raw diet. If you want to talk more about foods and stuff, drop me an email alys69 (at) gmail.com π
Hmm it looks like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess
I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any recommendations for beginner blog writers?
I’d genuinely appreciate it.
find a group that is similar to what you want to blog about. If you want to blog about your kids, find a group of mommy bloggers. If you want to blog about your pets, check out BlogPaws.
The first thing you need to decide is what you want your goal to be. do you just want to document your cats or do you want to become an influencer and make money because those are two totally different things and while you can combine the two it can muddy the waters.
Read a lot of blogs, comment on a lot of blogs so you will have people come back and visit you.
Kara has been promoted (do sheriff’s have chiefs? commissioners?) and now oversees from her new indoor office(s) to keep an eye on all the under-sheriffs. I hope she doesn’t have too much paper work!
Know what that window box needs.. a cat bed. Too bad you don’t have enough to go around.. π And there’s a shelf? Bet you could fit at least four beds in there!
Looks like Fred has a five cat bed, but I see enough space on that fuzzy looking thing Jake is on for another. Could it be a six cat bed or is that pushing the togetherness too much?
One of my cats, Vladimir, is long-haired and Very Fancy. His undercoat appears to possibly be made of velcro, and his Very Fancy mane is always getting tangled. I use a comb first to get out any tangles and then a regular slicker brush. I have both a cat comb and a people comb (slightly wide-toothed) that work equally well on him. If I go straight for the brush it generally doesn’t go well.
I have a long haired cat, and I use a metal comb on her. She loves it! She will come running when I pick it up, for her comb out. My husband is a pet groomer, and that is what he uses on long haired cats.
Thanks for all the brush help. I’d like to find a permanent home for him, so I’m trying to make him all pretty.
