Last Friday, local reader Jean challenged me to get as many cats in one picture as possible. I guesstimated that 10 in one picture was going to be the max we’d be able to achieve, but imagine my surprise when at snack time one night the kitchen was overrun with cats, and Fred started snapping pictures.
Fifteen!
And yes, I know that #1 is only Newt’s tail, but I’ve decided that it still counts! I’m really, really surprised that we were able to get that many cats in one picture. AND that no one was smacking anyone else, since there’s a LOT of hissing and growling and smacking when they’re waiting for snacks to be doled out.
In the first picture, with the Cookie and the Blues Brother, does the Cookie have ear tufts like a lynx? OMG.
Three of the Cookies have these tufts of hair at the ends of their ears – I don’t know if there’s a particular name for them, but I’ve been calling them “points” – as in “That’s not Orange, Fred, that’s Keebler – see his points?”
The point at the end of Pink’s right ear.
Those two pictures above are Keebler – they show his points quite nicely, don’t they?
The other Cookie with points is Blue, but I didn’t happen to get a picture of hers.
I tend to forget this until I see all of them together, but Keebler (back left of the picture) is much darker than his Meezer sisters. Look how strikingly dark those stripes on his legs are!
Pretty, pretty Hydrox. I love the way his whiskers look so striking against his black fur!
Another shot of Keebler. Look at him, looking so innocent when he was JUST biting that tail right in front of him and making his sister cry!
They are such sweet little monkeys, I can barely stand it!
Veruca keeps a suspicious eye on Elwood.
All four Wonkas in one bed – and Miz Poo as a bonus!
I can’t help it, this picture makes me laugh and laugh. Sugarbutt slept right through this horrific invasion of his privacy.

That’s a lot of cats in the kitchen ~ it looks like heaven to me! Love it!
Honestly, Keebler doesn’t look innocent in that picture at all. Look at his EYES…total mischief there!!!!
As for the 15 cats in one picture. Yep..shuffle shuffle shuffle! I have two kitties and with that I have often tumbled to the floor to avoid hurring them cuz they were right behind my heels!
Poor Sugarbutt. He would really be upset if he knew that picture was broadcasted over the internet! 🙂
hurring = hurting!!! Sorry about the typo.
Several breeds of domestic cats have ear tuffs like your babies. Our Forest Cats have them, some Main Coons and a few other breeds as well. So I think there is probably a bit of one of those in the kitties as well as the obvious Siamese and Tabby crossing.
Has Keebler been spending time in cooler places? Siamese (and Siamese-mutts) have their coats darken in the cooler areas of their bodies — hence the “points” on the limbs, tail and face.
My Siamese-mutt, Scout, started out looking like Pink when he was little. Pretty much all beige with some ghostly tabby stripes. After his first exposure to the cold outdoors, his coat darkened to about what Keebler looks like now.
Then he started sleeping under the A/C unit (which was a through-wall box), which is where some cold air flowed in from outside. (We’re in MN, so you should assume by cold, I mean COLD.)
He now looks like this:

If you look through his Flickr set, you can see how he darkened with age.
@Dan B. Maybe it was the same for him as it is for Ragdolls. It takes them 3 – 4 yrs to reach their full color and size. I know that Siamese are born all white (like dalmations are, too) and they darken with age. I have never heard of it having anything to do with cold. I think he just grew up! However, Scout is lovely!!!! Love the close up of his face!!!
GD: Have you ever thought you were stepping on a cat’s tail or paw and thrown yourself to the side so you wouldn’t hurt them, just to find out that you were actually stepping on a cat toy? I do that ALL THE TIME.
Dan B: Well, we do store him in the fridge… 🙂 No, they haven’t been anywhere particularly cold, though it’s cooled off a lot outside, and some parts of the house are colder than others. Scout is GORGEOUS!
So many sweet kitties!!! How do you not go into sugar shock everyday??
Poor Sugarbutt……sometimes it is good to NOT know what happened while you were sleeping. 😉
